MST OPENS “BUS STOP SHOP” IN DOWNTOWN MONTEREY

As public transportation becomes increasingly important in addressing the problems of air pollution, skyrocketing gasoline prices, parking shortages, and economic conditions draining the family budget, Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) is opening a satellite office in Monterey to make riding the bus easier and more cost-effective than ever. This new facility, known as the Bus Stop Shop, will address the transportation needs of workers, students, visitors, seniors and persons with disabilities, in one, easily accessible location.

The Bus Stop Shop is located in a 2000 square foot, newly renovated office space just a block from Alvarado Street and the Monterey Conference Center. It is just two blocks from the Monterey Transit Plaza and is also at a stop for MST Lines 1, 2, 2x, 20, 55, DART and the Trolley. Stops for lines 7, 22 and 24 are located just a block away in front of the Conference Center.

The facility will support a customer service representative, the MST RIDES program, and the Consolidated Transportation Services Agency. Tickets and passes are available for purchase in the lobby, and flooring made of recycled bus tires makes the shop environmentally friendly and fun. MST memorabilia will be available for purchase in the coming months. The Bus Stop Shop is located at 150 Del Monte Avenue across the street from the Monterey Conference Center. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM to 4:45 PM.

The Bus Stop Shop is funded in part by a generous $20,000 grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation to establish a training facility to teach persons with disabilities, elderly residents, and low-income commuters how to most effectively and economically use the various forms of public transportation.

The public is invited to attend an open house celebration scheduled for Monday, September 8 at approximately 11:30, after MST’s board meeting.
