The Northern California Regional Transit Training Consortium (NCRTTC) prepares for the implementation and delivery of its first technician training course locally. The NCRTTC, Hartnell College and Monterey-Salinas Transit have partnered to provide technical training geared towards the transit industry for this first course to be held at the Hartnell College East Campus on January 10 and 11, 2008.
The first course will provide training in the use of a Digital Volt Ohm Meter to support a modern transit fleet. Training participants include employees from Hartnell College, San Mateo County Transit, Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District and Monterey-Salinas Transit.
The training program structure duplicates the success of the Southern California Regional Transit Training Consortium comprised of 17 colleges and 13 transit systems. The southern California consortium has already trained 500 participants and provided more than 6,300 hours of training.
Faced with complex technologies such as on-board computerized microprocessors, hybrid drive technologies, global positioning systems (GPS), and computerized facility support systems, the transit industry today has a tremendous need for a highly skilled workforce.
“The Consortium has the perfect blend with challenging course content delivered locally in a short, intense learning environment. Providing this type of technical training locally makes it cost effective for MST and other regional transit agencies to participate.” says Carl Sedoryk, General Manager/CEO of Monterey-Salinas Transit.
There are plans for additional courses later this year and into 2009 as the course offering looks to include training in ITS applications for public transportation, transit electrical, transit braking systems, transit electronics, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), and multiplex control systems.
The NCRTTC is attempting to formalize a coalition of over 20 transit operators and community colleges in north and central California to join together to developing industry driven curriculum in short 1-3 day training sessions. This will help meet present and future technological needs of public transit systems.
