Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) is honoring Rosa Parks, along with other U.S. public transportation agencies in a National Transit Tribute to Rosa Parks Day. Thursday, December 1, 2005 marks the 50th anniversary of Parks’ refusal to give up her seat in the “White’s Only” section of a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama.
This act of defiance by Parks led to the boycotting of buses by many for more than a year until the U.S. Supreme Court deemed the segregation of buses was unconstitutional on December 21, 1956.
“50 years ago on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks reminded the world that one person can make a difference,” said Carl Sedoryk, MST General Manager/CEO. “And when she visited Monterey County in 1989, Monterey-Salinas Transit was honored to present her with a Lifetime Pass in recognition of her simple individual act against injustice, which ultimately influenced millions of people.”
Throughout the day, audio and text messages in both English and Spanish will be broadcast on board MST buses reminding passengers of the importance of Ms Parks contributions to equality and access. In addition the MST Board is scheduled to adopt a resolution recognizing December 1, 2005 as NATIONAL TRANSIT TRIBUTE TO ROSA PARKS DAY to honor the quiet strength and courage to do the right thing displayed by Ms. Parks that inspired a generation and will continue to inspire future generations. |
